Muslim’s name is associated with loneliness and innocence. When we talk of Muslim it definitely reminds us of the dark alleys of Kufa. It always brings tears of sadness to our eyes because Muslim’s only address is the close doors of Kufa.
Muslim and the Unfaithful Kufa
Muslim in Kufa
After forty days of examining the situation in Kufa, Muslim wrote this letter to Imam Hossein: “the majority of the people of Kufa are ready to support you. You can immediately move towards Kufa.”
Ibn Ziyad’s Arrival in Kufa
Ibn Ziyad arrived in Kufa in disguise. He was accompanied by five hundred people of Basra. People of Kufa that were waiting for Imam Hossein (a. s) thought he was the Imam.
Another Karbala in Kufa
Although Muslim was alone, Ubayd Allah was afraid of him and ordered his men to search all over the mosque in order to find Muslim. When they followed his orders, he entered the mosque.
Giving Quarter to Muslim
Ibn Ashas couldn’t arrest Muslim easily. He resorted to a trickery and said: ” Ibn Ziyad will give quarter to Muslim .” Muslim said: “How can I trust you falsehearted people!”
The Chronology of the Events, From Hazrat Muslim’s Move Towards Kufa Till His Martyrdom
15 Ramadan 60 AH
Husayn ibn Ali received thousands of letters of invitation from people of Kufa. So he decided to send Muslim ibn Aqeel to Kufa to study the situation there.
5 Shawwal 60 AH
Muslim arrived in Kufa. Lots of people appeared before Muslim ibn Aqeel and enthusiastically pledged their allegiance to Husayn ibn Ali as their Imam and pledged to support Hossein even with their lives.
11 Dhu’l-Qi’dah 60 AH
Muslim ibn Aqeel, encouraged by people’s response, reported to Hossein ibn Ali by letter that he should proceed to Kufa.
8 Dhu’l-Hijjah 60 AH
Hani was arrested and martyred. Muslim left Kufa while accompanied by 4000 people. Then, all these people left him alone and he took refuge in Tuwaa’s house.
9 Dhu’l-Hijjah 60 AH
Muslim fought bravely with Ibn Ziyad’s soldiers. Then, he was arrested and taken to the roof of Kufa’s dar al- Imara to be executed.
Letters from Kufa

Receiving so many petitions and messages from Kufa, Hosssein ibn Ali decided to send Muslim ibn Aqeel, as his emissary to Kufa to study the situation there. He wrote a letter to the people of Kufa and gave it to Muslim ibn Aqeel. In this letter Hossein ibn Ali said, “I am sending my cousin and one of the most trusted ones from my family, Muslim ibn Aqeel, to report to me about your affairs.” He was supposed to report whether the people of Kufa and their chiefs and elders are ready to act as they have claimed or not. Muslim arrived in Kufa at night. He went first to the house of one of trusted Shea. When people got the news of Muslim’s arrival, more than 18,000-30,000 people appeared before Muslim ibn Aqeel and enthusiastically pledged their allegiance to Hossein ibn Ali as their Imam and pledged to support Hosssein even with their lives.
Hazrat Muslim’s Martyrdom
Ibn Ziyad ordered Muqair Ibn Obran-e-Ahmari to take Muslim to the roof of Kufa’s dar al- Imara and behead him. Muslim was calm and composed as he was dragged up the steps. He was reciting “Allahu Akber” until the last moment. Then there was an absolute silence followed by a thud as the head of Muslim was chopped and his body fell to the ground.
Hossein’s Companions
Abduallah ibn Aqeel
He came to Karbala after his father’s death. He asked Imam Hossein for permission to enter the battlefield.
Abduallah ibn Muslim ibn Aqeel
He was 14 years old when he was martyred. He is the second martyr of Bani Hashim. When he asked Imam Hossein the permission to enter the battlefield, Imam Hossein asked him to leave Karbala with his mother, because it was a short time after losing Muslim.
Abdurahman ibn Aqeel
He is the son of “Aqeel ibn abi taleb” and “ome valid". He married Khadije, Imam Ali’s daughter, and had two sons named Said and Aqeel.
Jafar ibn Aqeel
After Abduallah ibn Muslim’s martyrdom, he asked Imam Hossein for permission to enter the battlefield.
Seif ibn Malek Abdi
He was one of Basra’s Shea. He was one of the people who gathered in Marie’s house. He joined Imam Hossein and accompanied him from Abtah till Karbala.
Halas ibn umar
He was one of the readers of Quran and sometimes Imam Hossein’s scriber. He accompanied Imam Hossein while moving from Medina to Mecca and then to Karbala. He asked Imam Hossein the permission to enter the battlefield in Ashura.
Naman ibn Amro
He was one of the people martyred in Karbala. He was from Kufa and one of Imam Ali’s companions. His brother was one of Imam Ali’s companions too.
